Barca lose key players for Champions tie with Arsenal

Barcelona's Malian midfielder Seydou Keita celebrates after scoring a goal during the Spanish King's Cup (Copa del Rey) football match Barcelona FC vs UD Almeria on January 26, 2011 at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona. The Catalan team have defensive worries ahead of their showdown with Arsenal which Keita has described as crucial for their season.
Barcelona have defensive worries ahead of Tuesday's showdown with Arsenal which midfielder Seydou Keita has described as crucial for their season.
Keita scored the only goal as Barcelona kept up the pressure at the top of La liga with a 1-0 win over Zaragoza at the weekend and now they turn their attention to the Champions League where they must overturn a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates to progress to the quarter-finals.
"Against Arsenal we have to go out with a strong mentality as this is probably the most important game of the season," said Keita.
"The key is not to let them score a goal because I'm sure that (Leo) Messi, (David) Villa and Pedro (Rodriguez) will get on the scoresheet in attack for us."
The bad news though for the Catalan side is that both their first choice centre-halves will be missing with Gerard Pique suspended and Carles Puyol injured.
Puyol had hoped to be ready in time after a knee injury he suffered in mid-January but following a training session on Sunday he was finally ruled out.
His commanding presence at the back will be a big loss as will Pique's ability to bring the ball out of defence and open up the opposition with his range of passing.
Against Zaragoza, a make-shift side was put out by coach Pep Guardiola as he looked to rest players ahead of Tuesday's game.
Keeper Victor Valdes returned from injury but Eric Abidal, Andres Iniesta, Sergio Busquets and David Villa were all on the bench.
Abidal has been in excellent form in recent weeks and he is expected to move from full back into the centre alongside the injury prone Gabi Milito, whose Barca career has been blighted by long spells in the treatment room.
The rest of the team though should be at full strength and it will be an ominous task for the Arsenal defence as they face a forward line which has already scored 78 goals domestically.
They are arguably a stronger proposition than last season when the pair met in the quarter-finals of the competition.
Arsenal drew that time at home but in the return leg they were taken apart 4-1 thanks to a majestic performance from Messi who scored all four goals.
Since then Bara have off-loaded Zlatan Ibrahimovic and brought in Villa who has fitted in seamlessly into the side's quick, two touch attacking football.
It is true that Arsenal have also improved and will have learnt from their experience last season when they tried to play Barca at their own game and came off a clear second best.
Arsenal's second place in the Premiership is clear indication of their development with Jack Wilshire having emerged, among the exciting talent, in midfield alongside Cesc Fabregas.
While Wilshire has described himself fit after picking up a knock on his ankle in the 0-0 draw with Sunderland on Saturday, Arsenal too have important injuries with Theo Walcott and Robin van Persie out while Cesc and Alex Song are doubts but expected to be fit.
Keita, who is likely to be on the bench for Barca with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets making up the midfield, expects a tougher clash this time round.
"It will be a different game because Arsenal will come here with more experience and with new ideas of how to face us. We are though playing well in the la liga and that gives you confidence for the other competitions," he said.

Van Persie blasts referee over 'joke' dismissal

Arsenal's Dutch forward Robin van Persie (L) is sent off during their Champions League football match Barcelona vs Arsenal at Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona. Van Persie labelled his sending-off in the 3-1 defeat by Barcelona as a 'joke' here on Tuesday.
Arsenal's Dutch forward Robin van Persie labelled his sending-off in the 3-1 Champions League Last 16 second leg defeat by Barcelona as a 'joke' here on Tuesday.
Van Persie, who was only passed fit to play on the morning of the match, was scathing about Swiss referee Massimo Busacca questioning why was he even officiating the match after a second booking in the second-half for shooting after the whistle had gone saw him sent off.
"My sending off was hugely influential on the outcome of the match," Van Persie told Sky Sports.
"It was a total joke. How can I hear the whistle when there are 95,000 fans jumping up and making noise.
"He's (Busacca) been bad all evening and I don't know why he's here.
"They are unbelievable these people."
Busacca was according to reports involved in a fiery exchange with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in the tunnel after the final whistle but the Gunners handler refused to go into details.
"I told him what I thought about his decision face to face," he told Sky Sports.
"He must never have played football at that level (the highest level) to have made that decision as he did."

Shakhtar move seamlessly into Champions League last eight

Willian (R) and Darijo Srna (L) of FC Shakhtar celebrate after Willian scored against AS Roma during their UEFA Champions League football match in Donetsk. Shakhtar won 3-0 and 6-2 on aggregate to move into the last eight.
Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk made no mistake in ensuring they reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time with an impressive 3-0 victory over 10-man AS Roma to win 6-2 on aggregate here on Tuesday.
Goals by Tomas Hubschmann, outstanding Brazilian Willian and Eduardo extended the 2009 UEFA Cup winners' unbeaten home record in European competition to October 2008 when they went down to Sporting Lisbon.
Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu said that he was delighted with the victory but added his side was a work in progress.
"This team is maturing, we have players of 20 and 21-years-old, under contracts for four to five years," said the experienced Romanian, who previously guided Turkish side Galatasaray to the last eight of the competition.
"We won the UEFA Cup, we have created a new benchmark against Roma, what interests me is to take a step forward, we are not thinking of what comes next."
His Roma counterpart Vincenzo Montella - who replaced Claudio Ranieri a fortnight ago - was sorry to have bowed out but saw much to encourage him.
"The guys showed that they have made progress, regardless of the result. They can still do better but there is no need to be demoralised by this result as we are on the right path," added the 36-year-old former Roma and Italy striker.
After suffering a 3-2 home defeat in the first leg, Roma's task was made virtually impossible when they were reduced to 10 men late in the first-half when Philippe Mexes was sent off for a second yellow card.
Dmytro Chygrynskiy (R) of FC Shakhtar vies for the ball with Marco Borriello of AS Roma during their UEFA Champions League football match in Donetsk. Shakhtar won 3-0 and 6-2 on aggregate to move into the last eight.
Czech midfielder Hubschmann took the congratulations of his team (known as the 'Pitmen' as they come from a mining region) in the 18th minute for the goal - his first in 17 months - though it appeared that he had not got a touch to Willian's low cross.
However, Montella will look askance at his defence who allowed such an innocuous goal to give the visitors an even more challenging task in coming back and becoming only the second side since Ajax in the 1995/96 edition to overcome a home loss in the first leg.
Roma, though, wasted a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit just before the half hour mark as English referee Howard Webb awarded them a penalty after Armenian international Henrik Mkhitaryan was penalised for holding back Marco Borriello.
But Roma's leading scorer then produced a dreadful effort which was saved by Andriy Pyatov.
The visitors' chances took another huge blow in the 41st minute when their French central defender Mexes was sent off after being booked for a second time by World Cup final referee Webb when he tugged back Luis Adriano.
However, Webb was found wanting on the stroke of half-time when he booked Shakhtar captain Dario Srna instead of Roma midfielder Daniele di Rossi, who merited a red card for a clear and malicious elbow on Srna and made worse as the referee failed to award a penalty as the offence took place inside the Italians' penalty area.
The energetic Mkhitaryan provided the first action of the second-half as he cut in from the right and unleashed a fierce shot from outside of the box but Roma goalkeeper Doni beat it away.
However, there was little Doni could do in the 58th minute as the 22-year-old Willian produced a finish of the highest class, bringing down a corner from outside the box and curling a half-volley into the top far corner to send the Ukrainian crowd into raptures.
Brazilian-born Croatian international Eduardo, the former Arsenal striker, rounded off a memorable evening for the hosts as he broke free three minutes from time and easily put the ball past Doni.

7 Tips for Maintaining Consumer

There are 2 things that can not be separated in operations, ie sellers and buyers to each other interact. Whatever type of business that we run both in services and trade can not be separated from the two earlier elements.
There is a saying that the consumer is king. Proverb that I think is still relevant to the present, or even universal. The seller will not be able to sell if there were no consumers, consumer vice versa will not be able to meet all keperluannya if there are no sellers.
I think the effort to maintain consumer is far more difficult than getting new customers. Every business activity everyone will be competing to retain customers in ways to make the consumer does not move to another customer. Treat the consumer as king over many perceived by companies engaged in services. Let us look at how a bank, between banks and the one with the other banks competing to provide services to its customers with the best. Start with the entrance opened, saying good morning pa .. bu, a friendly face smiling officer until things offer other assistance. Then we saw also how the company car dealership providing service, starting with the entrance be opened with a friendly face of customer service, given various explanations about a product that he sold, giving congratulations to diantarkannya back to the exit while the consumer home. Such tricks of how they attempt to win the hearts of its customers to become partners. If you want to survive, that is indeed demands.
I have the experience which might be of benefit to you how to retain customers. Look, I have a small business run from home since early 2001 in the field of computer rental and services that then I developed typing by adding new types of Internet cafe business, computer courses and computer services. I am a small business scale is still alive until now because I apply the concept of a trivial, "Giving Consumers Make the Best Service."
For those of you who have the same business as me or any business that you run the middle, there is a simple way how to retain customers in order to always give money to us. Here are tips for you:
1. Greet customers well. The point is, when consumers come to our place, welcome with a smile, as far as possible Selamet say morning or afternoon .. bu pa. The first point we have get an impression of "friendly".
2. Ask what needs. We must pro-actively ask first advance what the consumer needs by saying "there's nothing to me help you? ".
3. Provide the best quality. Every product that we give must be the best. Never we give to consumers from random. This will create a bad impression for the customers of our products selling.
4. Give a reasonable price. In the highly competitive price an product or service is critical. To buy something consumers usually choosy where a cheaper place. Give them with a reasonable price but still accompanied by good quality, basanya consumers will return again to our place.
5. Stay on Appointments. Strive every promise we give to consumers to always keep. Never give a promise to our consumers if we can not fulfill. Do not Avoid until consumers back and forth to the place where we not only because it promises we can Stay, time and money already because they waste our promises inappropriate. Consumers will be disappointed and move to another place. Edge- the loss of our own end, the consumer loses.
6. Create family. At the moment we are providing services, do not tend to focus on the final sale only. I mean during the process of service delivery took place, we should not be monotonous. Involve them in a chat that light-light, for example asking the residence or can also inquire about their families. This is intended to create relationships.
7. Create a psychological bond. This can be done if we are able to creating a familial bond with the consumer. To create I do spiritual bond by giving speech on monen certain moments, such as birthday, congratulations holidays and so forth. Quite a way to send sms. These tips enough powerful because consumers feel cared for. Well if the inner bond has been formed is difficult for consumers to move to another place.
Seven tips that I did for the sake of keeping customers. This concept because I have always maintained the principle that the customer is the lifeblood of my business . Very simple but the result was good enough for a small business can survive until now despite the economic crisis struck. Well how about you?; Probably have a better experience than from me, let's share experiences.

Kuyt treble for Liverpool dents Man U's title hopes

Liverpool's Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt celebrates after scoring his third goal during the Premier League football match against Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
Dirk Kuyt hit a hat-trick as Liverpool dented Manchester United's title hopes with a 3-1 victory over their bitter rivals at Anfield on Sunday.
Kuyt struck twice in quick succession in the first half and the Dutch forward completed his treble after the break to hand United their second defeat in the space of a week after the leaders' 2-1 loss at Chelsea on Tuesday.
Javier Hernandez reduced the deficit in stoppage time but United, who had only lost one league match this season before the start of this week, are now just three points ahead of second placed Arsenal, having played a game more than the Gunners.
Kuyt's hat-trick was the first for a Liverpool player against United since Peter Beardsley's treble in a 4-0 win back in September 1990 when Kenny Dalglish was first in charge of the Reds, but it was a sublime display from Luis Suarez that inspired the hosts.
"It's perfect," Kuyt told Sky Sports 1. "You dream about the hat-trick and to do it against United is the best feeling ever.
"I'm more than happy but I have to thank Luis because he played great and created two of the goals.
"They were quite easy goals, I used to score them in Holland when I played more like a striker. They count and I'm more than happy to take them."
United were without first-choice centre-backs Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and it showed as Liverpool drew first blood in the 34th minute thanks to a superb piece of skill from Suarez.
The former Ajax forward's surging run took him past three United defenders before he poked the ball through Edwin Van der Sar's legs for Kuyt to tap-in from barely a yard out.
United were rocked by that piece of Suarez magic and Dalglish's side increased their lead four minutes later when a misdirected header from Nani confused his defence and allowed Kuyt to head home from close range.
Tempers boiled over after that and Jamie Carragher was lucky to avoid a red card for a lunge on Nani that led the United winger to be stretchered off, while Rafael da Silva also sparked angry scenes with a nasty foul on Martin Skrtel.
Kuyt sealed Liverpool's first win over United in four attempts with a simple finish after a fumble by Van der Sar from Suarez's free-kick in the 65th minute.
There was still time for Dalglish to send on club record signing Andy Carroll for the England striker's first appearance since his £35 million move from Newcastle before Hernandez headed in from a Ryan Giggs cross.

Hat-trick hero Kuyt shatters United

Dirk Kuyt scored a hat-trick to blow the Premier League title race wide open as Liverpool cruised to a 3-1 win over leaders Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.
United went into the game knowing that victory would earn them a six-point lead over nearest rivals Arsenal at the summit with nine games remaining.
But Kuyt's treble condemned Sir Alex Ferguson's side to back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time in two years after their midweek loss at Chelsea.
United are locked on 18 domestic league titles with Liverpool but the Merseyside club were clearly in no mood to help their bitter rivals towards a record 19th success.
Kuyt put Liverpool in control with two goals in five minutes towards the end of the first half and he scored his third in the 65th minute before Javier Hernandez's late effort for United.
And Liverpool, who climb to sixth in the table, were able to give their £35 million signing Andy Carroll his long-awaited debut as the striker, fit after a thigh injury, came on for the final 15 minutes.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish said: "The players deserved that for the discipline, application and pride shown in themselves and the club.
"It's been a tough season, it's not finished yet but this has been the highest point so far for our supporters.
"It always matters who the opposition are, because you're not going to get too many opponents who are as good as Manchester United. We deserved to win, no doubt."
Ferguson went into this game leading Dalglish 7-4 ahead of the 20th league meeting between the two Scottish managers.
Ferguson also won the tactical battle between the pair when United defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the FA Cup two months ago in what was Dalglish's first match back since returning to the Anfield hot seat.
But there was revenge in the Merseyside air as Kuyt's first half double put the hosts in command.
United were missing their first-choice central defensive pairing of Nemanja Vidic, who was suspended, and Rio Ferdinand, who was injured, forcing Ferguson to field Wes Brown alongside Chris Smalling.
And the inexperienced partnership was immediately tested as Luis Suarez, twice, and Maxi Rodriguez both had efforts before Dimitar Berbatov was denied by the post in what was United's first serious attack in the 16th minute.
Up until that moment the game had been fairly even but the hosts took control in an explosive finish to the half.
Kuyt's opening goal in the 34th minute was down to the brilliance of Suarez, the Uruguay forward leaving Rafael da Silva and Michael Carrick chasing shadows before squaring for the Netherlands international to score his first ever goal against United.
His second followed five minutes later courtesy of an error by Nani, the Portuguese winger heading into the path of Kuyt to nod past Edwin van der Sar and double his side's lead from close range.
Yet what had been a compelling first half took an ugly turn as both sides were fortunate to retain 11 men.
Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was extremely fortunate to escape with a caution for a nasty 39th minute challenge on Nani, the United player climbing off the floor to remonstrate with the referee before being carried off on a stretcher after collapsing.
Then Rafael, who was booked, was lucky to stay on after his X-rated challenge on Lucas in the 44th minute.
United desperately needed a goal early in the second half and they nearly got one when Berbatov's 58th minute header was heading for the net only to be chested off the line by Raul Meireles.
But Liverpool survived and seven minutes later confirmed their fifth win in nine Premier League games since Dalglish returned when Kuyt completed his hat-trick.
Once again Suarez was again involved as his curling free-kick was beaten away by Van der Sar into the path of Kuyt to become the first Liverpool player since Peter Beardsley in 1990 to score three against United.
There was still time for Carroll to come off the bench and make his long-awaited debut in the 74th minute before substitute Hernandez scored in stoppage time with a glancing header.

Inter crush Genoa in Italian league

Inter Milan's Cameroonian forward Samuel Eto'o celebrates scoring against Genoa during warm up before their Italian Serie A football match in Milan's San Siro Stadium. Inter won 5-2.
A blazing second-half performance saw Inter Milan come back from a goal down to crush Genoa 5-2 at the San Siro and stay five points behind Serie A leaders AC Milan on a Sunday when Lazio beat Palermo to move within two points of goalless Napoli.
A brace from the brilliant Samuel Eto'o and one goal each from Giampaolo Pazzini, Goran Pandev and Yuto Nagatomo - all in the second half, cancelled out Rodrigo Palacio's 40th-minute opener for Genoa before the visitors scored a last-minute consolation through Mauro Boselli.
Inter coach Leonardo, who had witnessed Milan's 1-0 win at Juventus on Saturday night, was beaming at the final whistle.
"It was not easy against their five defenders but after Pazzini's goal it all opened up and it was a joy to watch", said the former Milan coach before turning his attention towards the potentially scudetto-deciding Milan derby in early April.
"The derby is always the derby - it's a one off. It will be spectacular in every sense but there are 10 games".
Meanwhile, third-placed Napoli's own title challenge appears to have run out of steam after the Azzurri were held to a goalless draw by lowly Brescia. In a tense affair at the San Paolo, coach Walter Mazzarri was sent from the dugout in the first half for protesting as Napoli, impotent without Ezequiel Lavezzi, fell eight points behind Milan.
In Rome, an early double from Giuseppe Sculli saw Lazio defeat a nervous Palermo 2-0.
After the seven they conceded against Udinese that did for coach Delio Rossi, Palermo remained unbreached for just seven minutes in Serse Cosmi's first game in charge. A beautifully measured pass by Cristian Ledesma sent Sculli clean through and the former Genoa striker finished calmly for his first Lazio goal.
Ten minutes later and the two combined again with Ledesma lifting a perfect pass for Sculli to head home. Palermo's Javier Pastore had a header saved and Lazio's Hernandes a shot parried soon after but at 2-0 both sides seemed content, for different reasons, to defend in numbers with the rest of the game played at a low tempo.
"We got the goals and used out heads to close the game out - they didn't cause us too many problems", said Lazio skipper Ledesma, looking forward to next weekend's derby against Roma. "It doesn't matter where we are in the league for that particular game. It goes beyond a league match".
Antonio Di Natale's second-half penalty, his 22nd goal of the campaign, gave fifth-placed Udinese a 1-0 win at home to rock-bottom Bari.
"Today we won the most difficult game of the season", said coach Francesco Guidolin, whose free-scoring Udinese side had lost their opening four fixtures. "Bari didn't give up, but I have 25 sons who I'm very pleased with right now".
Eto'o was in the thick of things from the start in Milan. After the Cameroonian had tested Eduardo on 20 and 35 minutes, Genoa took the lead through Palacio's rasping cross-shot.
Lazio's forward Giuseppe Sculli celebrates after scoring against Palermo's goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu during their Italian Serie A football match at Rome's Olympic stadium. Lazio won 2-0.
But in a very different second period, Pazzini side-footed home Maicon's cross to equalise on 50min before Eto'o gave Inter the lead a minute later after Eduardo had fumbled Pandev's shot.
Six minutes on and Eto'o struck a brilliant 18th goal of the season. Pandev made it 4-1 on 68min with only his second goal of the season and Japanese defender Nagatomo scored a fifth on 82min with his first Inter goal before Boselli's late header made the final score 5-2.
Elsewhere, Adrian Mutu struck a first-half brace to help mid-table Fiorentina to a 3-0 home win over Catania, while Marco Di Vaio scored his 18th goal of the season in Bologna's 2-2 home draw with ninth-placed Cagliari.
Earlier on Sunday, two goals from Emanuele Giaccherini helped Cesena to a 3-2 win at struggling Sampdoria and stay above the drop zone, while sixth-placed Roma won 2-1 at Lecce on Friday.

Ronaldo inspires Madrid to seven goal defeat of Malaga

Real Madrid's Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates his second goal after scoring against Levante during their Spanish league football match Real Madrid vs Malaga at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. Madrid won 7-0.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored a second half hat-trick to make it 27 league goals for the season as Real Madrid crushed hapless Malaga 7-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona to seven points.
Barcelona won 1-0 at Valencia on Wednesday to put the pressure on Real who had drawn 0-0 at Deportivo La Coruna in their last match, but Jose Mourinho's side responded by maintaining their 100 percent home record with their biggest win of the season.
Ronaldo had gone four games in all competitions without a goal - a drought by his high standards - but the Portuguese star hit the goal trail as Real ran riot.
First half goals from French forward Karim Benzema, Argentine winger Angel di Maria and Brazilian full back Marcelo put Real into a commanding first half lead before Ronaldo took centre stage in the second half to give Manuel Pellegrini a horrid return to the Bernabeu.
Malaga coach Pellegrini guided Real to a record 96 points in the league last season only to be sacked after one season to pave the way for Mourinho's arrival.
Benzema started the match ahead of Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor and repaid the faith by opening the scoring on 27 minutes.
Xabi Alonso delivered a free-kick into the box and Malaga defended it poorly allowing Benzema to stay onside and the Frenchman used the outside of his right boot to steer a volley into the roof of the net.
Benzema had a second goal ruled out for offside minutes later after Mesut Ozil had crashed a left-footed free-kick off the post.
Real were looking menacing and scored again on 35 minutes as Malaga were blitzed on the counter attack.
The visitors were attacking with a corner but Madrid cleared and launched a speedy attack and some woeful defending allowed di Maria to run clean though on goal.
The Argentine showed good composure to side-foot home and then played a key role in the third goal on the stroke of half-time.
Di Maria floated a neat pass to Marcelo and the Brazilian thundered a left-footed volley into the corner as Real went in 3-0 at the break.
Real Madrid's Argentinian midfielder Angel di Maria (C) vies with Malaga's Portuguese midfielder Eliseu (L) and Malaga's defender Manu Torres during their Spanish league football match Real Madrid vs Malaga at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, in Madrid. Madrid won 7-0.
The second half belonged to Ronaldo as the world's most expensive player bagged a 26-minute hat-trick.
Ronaldo opened his account in the 50th minute and added his second from the penalty spot on 67 minutes with an emphatic spot-kick.
The Portuguese star completed his hat-trick nine minutes later after a good pass from substitute Sergio Canales and joins Barcelona's Lionel Messi at the top of the goalscoring charts on 27 goals.
Benzema grabbed his second on 61 minutes and could have had a hat-trick himself, while Ronaldo could have scored six or seven against a poor Malaga who stay second from bottom three points from safety.
Earlier Almeria stay rooted to the bottom of the Spanish first division after a 1-1 home draw with 10-man Racing Santander on Thursday.
Racing played 73 minutes of the match with ten men after Brazilian defender Henrique was sent off early on, but Almeria could not capitalise on their numerical advantage.
Henrique, on loan from Barcelona, hauled down speedy Argentine Pablo Piatti on 17 minutes to earn a red card, but the extra man didn't show as Racing took a 37th minute lead through Gonzalo Colsa and then Adrian Morales missed a penalty close to half-time.
Almeria equalised on 64 minutes through Albert Crusat but the Kings Cup semi-finalists stay bottom of the table four points from safety.
Racing stretched their unbeaten run to six league games with new coach Marcelino guiding the club away from the relegation zone and up to 12th.

SFA reduce Lennon ban

Celtic boss Neil Lennon , seen here in 2006, has had his six-match touchline ban reduced to four after a meeting of the Scottish FA's Appeals Board night.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has had his six-match touchline ban reduced to four after a meeting of the Scottish FA's Appeals Board on Thursday night.
Lennon was sent to the stand by referee Craig Thomson at Tynecastle back in November after a bust-up with fourth official Steven McLean, and on top of the automatic two-match ban he was further punished in January by the SFA for "excessive misconduct".
However, after the appeal at Hampden, Lennon had his ban reduced by two matches.
An SFA statement read: "The Appeals Board has tonight (Thursday) found that the Scottish FA's charge of excessive misconduct against the Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, was inevitable.
"However, they set aside the original sanction of a two-match automatic suspension plus a further four matches for excessive misconduct and have imposed a new sanction of an automatic two-match suspension and an additional two matches.
"The new sanction will be imposed with immediate effect."
However, the former Celtic skipper could be hit with another ban before he completes the current one which is set to start in Saturday's home game against Hamilton in the Bank Premier League.
Lennon and Rangers assistant boss Ally McCoist are in trouble after having to be separated at the end of an ill-tempered Scottish Cup fifth-round replay on Wednesday which Celtic won at home with a Mark Wilson goal.
SFA chief executive Stewart Regan condemned "the inflammatory and irresponsible behaviour" witnessed during and after the match and confirmed an investigation had been launched into all incidents, including the three red cards picked up by the visitors.
Ibrox duo Steven Whittaker and Madjid Bougherra were sent off during the match, both for two yellow cards, and after the final whistle team-mate El-Hadji Diouf also picked up a red card for a second booking after approaching referee Calum Murray.
The angry scenes during and after the game have been discussed in the Scottish Parliament and both clubs have agreed to meet officials from the Scottish Government and police to discuss the fall-out from the derby fixtures.

Ferguson charged over Chelsea ref rant

Manchester United's Scottish manager Sir Alex Ferguson, seen here in Feburary 2011, was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association on Thursday following his criticism of referee Martin Atkinson in the defeat at Chelsea.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association on Thursday following his criticism of referee Martin Atkinson in the defeat at Chelsea.
Ferguson appeared to question Atkinson's impartiality following United's 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, which saw the Red Devils manager hit out at Atkinson's failure to dismiss Blues defender David Luiz.
"The FA has today charged Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson with Improper Conduct relating to media comments," an FA statement said.
Ferguson has until 4pm (1600GMT) on Tuesday, March 8 to respond to the charge, which could lead to a fine or a touchline ban.
In a scathing post-match tirade broadcast on Manchester United's official television channel, Ferguson gave a damning verdict on Atkinson's display.
"You want a fair ref. I don't know how he got this game. I must say, when I saw who it was, I did fear that," Ferguson told MUTV.
"It's three years in a row that decisions have changed the game here. It was incredible.
"Luiz had done (Javier) Hernandez off the ball and nothing was done. Then he does (Wayne) Rooney, clear as day.
"You are talking about what changed the game in the second half. These are decisions that change the game and he is going to be refereeing every week!
"I'm proud of my players. They endured a lot of bad decisions against them and they have done their best.
"They (Chelsea) got a lot of decisions that surprised me in a major game like that."

London Olympic stadium to be taken on by West Ham

West Ham's bid to take over the 2012 Olympics stadium was given formal approval by the British Government and Mayor of London Boris Johnson.

West Ham's bid to take over the 2012 Olympics stadium was given formal approval by the British Government and Mayor of London Boris Johnson on Thursday.
The green light allows the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) to enter into negotiations with West Ham and their consortium partners to agree a lease for the facility.
"We are delighted with the progress that has been made and very pleased we have reached this very significant milestone in determining the long-term legacy for the Olympic Park following the Games," local government minister Bob Neill said in a statement.
The OPLC had given its backing to West Ham last month after a bitter battle for the stadium venue with Premier League rivals Tottenham.
West Ham won after tabling a bid which proposed retaining the stadium's running track.
Bid rivals Spurs had proposed demolishing the stadium and replacing it with a purpose built venue without an athletics track, a plan that had been condemned by British Olympic officials.

Maicon, Neymar back for Brazil's Scotland date

Inter Milan defenders Maicon, seen here in 2010, and Santos midfielder Elano, overlooked since Brazil's quarter-final exit at last year's World Cup, all returned to Brazilina squad to face Scotland in a friendly game in London on March 27.

Brazil coach Mano Menezes made several high-profile recalls on Thursday when he named his squad to face Scotland in a friendly game in London on March 27.
Inter Milan defenders Lucio and Maicon and Santos midfielder Elano, overlooked since Brazil's quarter-final exit at last year's World Cup, all returned to the fold, along with Santos starlet Neymar.
Neymar, 19, missed the 1-0 defeat by France in Brazil's most recent game last month as he was firing his country's under-20 side to glory at the South American Youth Championship in Peru.
Manchester United pair Rafael da Silva and Anderson were both overlooked, the latter due to injury, while AC Milan attacker Robinho was also surprisingly left out of the 24-man squad.
"Robinho was included in all the previous squads and he just needs to take a break," explained Menezes at a press conference.
"I'll be counting on him at the Copa America. This is just a chance for him to recover."
There was no room either for Real Madrid playmaker and former Ballon d'Or winner Kaka, despite his return to action following a six-month spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Having been beaten 1-0 by arch-rivals Argentina in November, Brazil will be looking for a first win in three matches as they continue to build towards the Copa America in Argentina in July.
The meeting with Scotland, who have not qualified for a major tournament since the 1998 World Cup, will take place at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.

Wenger focuses on title after FA Cup romp

Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner (left) celebrates scoring with teammate Marouane Chamakh during their FA Cup fifth round replay match vs Leyton Orient at the Emirates Stadium, London. Arsenal won 5-0.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger turned his attention back to the English Premier League title race immediately after defeating Leyton Orient to seal a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Wednesday.
The Gunners were the beneficiaries of Chelsea's win over Manchester United on Tuesday, as their game in hand and meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson's team mean their destiny is in their own hands.
"For us, it keeps us even better in the race," Wenger said.
"I felt anyway, no matter what happened (in United's clash), whether it was a draw, would have been good as well. It just depends on us.
"It's down to our results. I say that for a long time, it depends how consistent we will be with our results. That will decide the championship."
Wenger's side face Sunderland at the weekend and warmed up for that clash by thrashing League One team Orient in the Cup, with Nicklas Bendtner scoring a hat-trick.
It went some way to getting over the disappointment of losing to Birmingham in the League Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.
They now face title rivals United in the next round at Old Trafford.
"We were professional," Bendtner said.
"After the disappointment of Sunday it was important for us.
"We know its going to be difficult against United but we very much look forward to that game when it comes.
"We just need to focus on Sunderland first."
Next week Arsenal also play the second leg of their Champions League clash against Barcelona, taking a 2-1 lead to the Nou Camp.
Arsenal's Nicklas Bendtner (L) scores the third goal during their FA Cup fifth round replay match vs Leyton Orient at the Emirates Stadium in London. Arsenal won 5-0.
Robin van Persie is set to miss that match as he is out for three to four weeks with a knee injury.
Tomas Rosicky suffered mild concussion against Orient but should recover, and there is optimism of Cesc Fabregas overcoming his hamstring complaint.
"I personally hope he will be there next Tuesday," Wenger said.
"He has a chance to play in Barcelona.
"I don't think he will be involved on Saturday - no chance. But we will try with him on Sunday and Monday and have a final test on Monday morning.
"We go from day to day. Two or three days ago thinking to play part of game if all goes well."
Orient manager Russell Slade praised Wenger for getting the best out of his players after suffering disappointment at Wembley - Marouane Chamakh and Gael Clichy were the other scorers.
"It was a hard night, we found a side in good form with a real strong focus and a spot-on attitude," Slade said.
"Mr Wenger got the performance from his players.
"They were ruthless really with the first three goals. Three attacks, three opportunities and three goals. But I was proud of the way we kept the ball and kept passing.
"We need to go away and learn from that and establish some momentum in the league and try to push and see if we can attain a top-six spot. I think we can do that."

Sweet revenge for Magath as Bayern exit Cup

Another piece of silverware slipped from Bayern Munich's grasp on Wednesday as the holders were dumped out of the German Cup after a 1-0 semi-final defeat at home to Schalke 04 coached by former Bayern handler Felix Magath, seen here on the sideline.
Another piece of silverware slipped from Bayern Munich's grasp on Wednesday as the holders were dumped out of the German Cup after a 1-0 semi-final home defeat to Schalke 04, coached by former Bayern boss Felix Magath.
A first-half goal from Schalke's veteran Spaniard Raul means the Royal Blues will face second-division MSV Duisburg in the final at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on May 21.
This is Bayern's second straight home defeat and pressure is mounting on coach Louis van Gaal with signs demanding 'Van Gaal out!' seen around the stadium.
The picture is now much bleaker exactly a week after the joy of Munich's 1-0 win at Inter Milan in the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 clash as Bayern are virtually out of the league race and now out of the cup.
Last Saturday's 3-1 defeat also at home to Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund has left Bayern 16 points off the pace with 10 games left and effectively out of the title race.
"Schalke improved their hand with the early 1-0 lead, then they closed up shop in defence," said disappointed Bayern captain Philipp Lahm.
"We just couldn't find a solution."
"When we won't be German champions and cup winners, that is not a good season for Bayern."
This was sweet revenge for Magath who was sacked by Bayern in February 2007, despite leading Munich to the league and cup double in the previous two seasons.
"We knew we had a chance, but we could have done with one more goal," said Magath, whose side has struggled in the Bundesliga this season.
"We deserved this, even if we didn't contribute much in the second-half and had to defend.
"The final in Berlin is something special and I am glad we are heading there."
Raul added to Bayern's woes with his 15th goal of the season with a header in the 15th minute.
Bayern poured on the pressure after the break with Dutch winger Arjen Robben just failing to connect with a Franck Ribery cross, while Schalke's Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Bastian Schweinsteiger with a header.
Robben was booked with 20 minutes remaining for clattering Neuer as Bayern were again frustrated, while Schalke's Japan defender Atsuto Uchida also picked up a yellow for fouling Lahm.
On Tuesday, Duisburg beat fellow second division side Energie Cottbus 2-1 to book their place in the final.
This is the first time since 2004, when second-tier Alemannia Aachen lost 3-2 to first division side Werder Bremen, that a second division team has reached the final.
With an automatic place in the Europa League on offer for the winners of the cup, Duisburg -- currently sixth in the second division -- are just one more giant-killing away from a European place.
They have already beaten Bundesliga teams Cologne, in the round of 16, and Kaiserslautern, in the quarter-finals, on the way to the final.

Man City ease past second-string Villa in FA Cup

Manchester City's Mario Balotelli celebrates scoring during their FA Cup fifth round match vs Aston Villa at The City of Manchester Stadium in Manchester. City stepped up their bid to end their long wait for silverware by cruising into quarter-finals with a 3-0 win.
Roberto Mancini believes Manchester City are still to see the best from Mario Balotelli, despite seeing his striker go some way to answering his calls with an eye-catching performance in the 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday in their FA Cup fifth round clash.
The Manchester City manager questioned the Italian striker's work-rate and demanded he do more ahead of the match.
Balotelli, who cost 24million, has been struggling with a knee problem and had threatened to earn more yellow cards than goals since his arrival from Inter Milan.
But after his fine finish took him into double figures for the season, Mancini said: "Mario played well and scored a fantastic goal against Villa.
"He's improving all the time, but it's hard as he has just returned from injury. But I know there's still more to come from him."
Manchester City have been fighting on three fronts with the FA Cup joining the Europa League and the Premier League in their chase for silverware.
It's been 25 years since their last trophy but they took a step closer to achieving that aim as goals from Yaya Toure, Balotelli and David Silva, all summer signings, saw off a weakened Aston Villa side.
Manchester City will now face Reading, the Championship side who pulled off a big upset by beating Everton.
And although it appears that the Premier League title is unlikely, with Mancini writing off his team's chances, the FA Cup quarter-final is the least of his priorities.
Securing a place in next season's Champions League with a top-four finish has shot to the top of the Italian coach's list of priorities.
"Against Villa they (Villa) had the option to change.
"I don't have that option at this moment. We have been playing a lot of games. I have some tired players.
Aston Villa's Richard Dunne (right) and Manchester City's Aleksander Kolarov are seen here during their FA Cup fifth round match at The City of Manchester Stadium in Manchester. City won 3-0.
"Of course I'm pleased to get through.
"But first we need to get fourth position.
"We have been between first and fourth for 28 games. Now is the time for key games before that."
While Manchester City were given a helping hand by Villa fielding a weakened team, manager Gerrard Houllier defended his team selection.
The Frenchman, who will come under fire from his own supporters desperate for success having seen neighbours Birmingham City just win the League Cup, believes securing their Premier League status should remain their priority.
Despite an upturn in fortunes that sees them sit comfortably in mid-table, Houllier refused to dismiss his side's chances of being dragged back into a relegation fight.
"They (his players in the match) are all internationals and they are all doing well. They are proven top-class players who I picked.
"If I had to do it, I'd do it again. We have an important game against Bolton. We can still face a relegation fight, definitely."

UEFA wants five officials at Euro 2012

Referees before a UEFA Europa League football match in 2010. UEFA wants to have five officials on hand for matches at Euro 2012, its chief Michel Platini said Tuesday, in a renewed drive to deal with disputed on-pitch decisions.
UEFA wants to have five officials on hand for matches at Euro 2012, its chief Michel Platini said Tuesday, in a renewed drive to deal with disputed on-pitch decisions.
Speaking during a visit to Poland, co-host of the 2012 European championships along with neighbour Ukraine, Platini said adding officials to the traditional trio of a referee and two linesmen had proven its mettle in continental club competitions.
"I'm 500 percent satisfied with the way having five officials has worked in the Champions League and Europa League," he told reporters.
"The results have been great, and the referees are really happy to have two colleagues to help them out," he added.
The concept of extra officials is being tested out by FIFA, world football's governing organisation.
The International Football Association Board, which determines the rules of the game, has been wrestling with how finally to end years of controversy over goals deemed to have been disallowed or approved unfairly.
"We have an International Board meeting on Friday and Saturday in Wales and we're going to return to the issue of five officials," Platini said.
"We've asked the International Board to allow five officials during the European championships. We'll see that they have to say to us. I hope the answer will be positive," he added.
Platini spoke at a ceremony to mark the start of ticket sales for the 16-nation tournament -- European football's showcase -- which kicks off in Warsaw on June 8, 2012 and ends with the final in the Ukrainian capital Kiev on July 1.
The event started with hiccups, as staff had to rip down a stage curtain behind which Platini and fellow officials were sitting, after it failed to glide open.
Platini's microphone then failed to work right away and when it did, was hit by interference from his mobile telephone, which he threw to a colleague in the audience.
"You see, that's the problem with technology," Platini said, with a grin, taking advantage of the situation to reaffirm what he not want to see in refereeing.
"That's why I'm against using video," he said.
FIFA has also rebuffed calls for the use of video to resolve contentious decisions, despite it being a success in sports such as tennis, cricket, and rugby league and union. The rationale is that it would disrupt the flow of the game.

Moyes 'massive disappointment' after Everton FA Cup KO

Reading's Antiguan midfielder Mikele Leigertwood (L)vies with Everton's French forward Louis Saha during their English FA Cup fifth round football match in Liverpool. Reading won 1-0.
Everton manager David Moyes admitted his side deserved to lose after the Toffees were sent tumbling out of the FA Cup by Championship side Reading here Tuesday.
After stunning Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the previous round, Everton had entertained hopes of a lengthy run in the FA Cup and were expected to progress safely to the quarter-finals against Reading.
But a first-half goal from Reading defender Matt Mills stunned Goodison Park into silence and ultimately sent the Royals into a last eight tie against either Manchester City or Aston Villa.
It was a bitterly disappointing exit for Everton, who left the field to a chorus of boos as Reading's players celebrated a famous win.
"It's a massive disappointment for us because we did so well in the previous round," Moyes said afterwards. "You can only ask for a home tie and we didn't take advantage of it."
Moyes said poor defending and a lack of creativity in the opposition half had weighed against his side.
"We could have defended the set piece for the goal, our attacking wasn't good enough. I think they defended really well," Moyes said.
"They got back behind the ball and we didn't have enough craft at the top of the pitch to make things happen."
Moyes also paid tribute to Reading's performance. "Terrific the way they got about their job," he said.
"The longer it went on the more desperate we became."
Reading manager Brian McDermott meanwhile said his team had been quietly confident of scoring an upset just as they did last year when they knocked out Everton's city rivals Liverpool in the third round.
"We thought there was an opportunity for us," McDermott said.
"We've got such a good bunch of players and spirit and we wanted to take the game to Everton.
"It didn't work for the first 15 minutes, they passed around us. But we got the goal and once you've scored it gives you something to hang on to."
McDermott believes the result will lift the club as they mount a late push for a Championship play-off place.
"We are close. If you can come to Goodison and put on a performance like that it gives you a lot of hope for the future," he said. "Nights like that are just going to galvanise the club."
Reading grabbed a shock lead after 26 minutes, when Mills stabbed home from eight yards after the Everton defence failed to clear a corner.
The goal infused Reading with confidence and Jimmy Kebe had a golden chance to make it 2-0 when clean through on Everton's goal.
Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was alert to the danger however, snuffing out what looked like a certain Reading goal and keeping the home side in the match.
Leon Osman had a clear chance to level it for Everton just before half-time only for the midfielder to head just over after being picked out by a Leighton Baines cross.

Sevilla cruise past 10-man Gijon

Mallorca's defender Pau Cendros (L) vies with Espanyol's forward Jose Maria Callejon (R) during the Spanish league football match RCD Espanyol vs Mallorca at the Cornella-El Prat stadium in Cornella de Llobregat. Mallorca recorded their first away win at Espanyol in over a decade with a 2-1 comeback win
Sevilla boosted their European hopes with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over 10-man Sporting Gijon on Tuesday to move level on points with sixth-placed Athletic Bilbao.
Brazilian international forward Luis Fabiano opened the scoring from the penalty spot for his ninth league goal of the season with Diego Perotti and Alvaro Negredo also on target in a convincing home win.
It was Sevilla's fourth game in nine hectic days but the hosts were aided by the first half sending off of Gijon midfielder Sebastian Eguren.
Eguren fouled Fabiano to concede a penalty on 28 minutes and Sporting had to stomach a double punishment as the Uruguayan was given a red card.
Fabiano made no mistake thumping a low penalty into the bottom left hand corner.
Minutes later Federico Fazio hit the crossbar with a downward header before Argentine Perotti made it 2-0 with a fine first time volley.
Negredo scored a third in the second half as Sevilla climbed to seventh while Sporting hover one point above the relegation zone.
Earlier on Tuesday Real Mallorca recorded their first away win at Espanyol in over a decade with a 2-1 comeback win at the Cornella-El Prat thanks to second half goals from Pierre Webo and Emilio Nsue.
Fifth-placed Espanyol had taken an 18th minute lead through Alvaro Vazquez but Cameroon forward Webo headed an equaliser on 62 minutes and Nsue netted the winner eight minutes from time as the islanders won at Espanyol for the first time since 2000.
"After the break our goalkeeper practically didn't touch the ball and I think it was a deserved win," said Mallorca coach Michael Laudrup.
It was a major setback for Espanyol's European hopes and Athletic Bilbao, two points behind in sixth, can move above them with a win at Real Zaragoza on Wednesday.
For Mallorca it was only their third away win of the season as they move four points off the top six.
With just seven minutes gone Mallorca won a penalty with centre-back Jordi Amat clipping Webo in the box.
Chori Castro stepped up but goalkeeper Carlos Kameni guessed the right way and got down low to palm away the spot-kick.
A minute later Espanyol went down the other end and Jose Callejon crashed a shot against the post.
The hosts got the breakthrough on 18 minutes with Mallorca getting their offside trap horribly wrong as Vazquez bent his run before keeping a cool head to slot home.
Mallorca thought they had equalised on the half hour mark but Webo's header was harshly ruled out for offside.
Livewire Webo got the goal his performance deserved with a header to level the scores just after the hour mark.
Winger Nsue then popped up with a late 82nd minute winner as Mallorca took the spoils.
Barcelona have a tough trip to third-placed Valencia on Wednesday as they bid to stretch their seven-point lead over Real Madrid.
It will be a special game for Barcelona striker David Villa who returns to Valencia for the first time since his 40 million euro move in the summer.
Real Madrid host lowly Malaga on Thursday looking to bounce back from their disappointing 0-0 draw at Deportivo La Coruna with a 13th win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Malaga, second from bottom of the table, are coached by former Real boss Manuel Pellegrini who managed the club last season but a club record 96 points saw them finish runners-up to Barcelona and the Chilean was axed.

Pato inspires Milan to crucial Serie A win over Napoli

AC Milan's Pato celebrates after scoring during the Serie A match AC Milan vs Napoli, at San Siro stadium in Milan. A brilliant performance by Pato saw AC Milan inflict what could prove to be a fatal blow to Napoli's Serie A title hopes here on Monday as the leaders cruised to a 3-0 win.
A brilliant performance by Brazilian striker Pato saw AC Milan inflict what could prove to be a fatal blow to Napoli's Serie A title hopes here on Monday as the leaders cruised to a 3-0 win.
The 21-year-old - a somewhat controversial omission from last year's World Cup finals squad - set up Ghanaian Kevin-Prince Boateng for Milan's second goal and then added a glorious third two minutes later to give them a five point lead over champions Inter Milan while Napoli are six points adrift of the leaders.
Swedish international striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic had opened the scoring for Milan early in the second-half from the penalty spot - a harsh call by referee Gianluca Rocchi for handball on Napoli defender Salvatore Aronica, who while the ball clearly hit his arm it did not seem to be deliberate on his part.
Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said he believed from his viewing point that Rocchi had called it correctly.
"Seen from the sidelines it was a penalty," he said.
"But independent of that moment, Milan produced a good performance, and deserved the victory.
"We really played very well, (Christian) Abbiati didn't have to make a save and we created several chances.
"The thing that really pleased me was that the team was looking to make it 2-0, and even 3-0.
"The six point lead is a tidy advantage, but there are still a lot of matches to go, including the derby with Inter, and Napoli cannot be discounted yet."
His Napoli counterpart Walter Mazzarri said that it was not a penalty and that his team had been unnerved by it. However, he said there was still a lot of water to flow under the bridge before the title was won.
"We lost a final, but there are still 11 remaining," he said.
"We can lose at Milan, 1-0 or 3-0 changes nothing, now it is imperative that we get back to work and get back to how we were before this match.
AC Milan's Swedish forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic reacts during the serie A match AC Milan vs Napoli, at San Siro stadium in Milan. AC Milan won 3-0.
"We never spoke of a target, we are just trying to do our best. Losing doesn't change our routine, we are preparing for our next match against Brescia.
"They (Milan) were too strong, and we were unable to impose our style of play, to pass the ball as we know how to do, and also we were tired having played in the Europa League last Thursday.
"But the penalty dictated the outcome of the match, after it, my guys got upset and became disjointed, they played like kids, and that played into Milan's hands.
"It is only by playing one discovers things such as happened tonight, that we must remain calm, but we are learning all the time."
Napoli - who exited the Europa League last week - gave few problems to Milan and the game went beyond them in the 77th minute when Pato found an onrushing Boateng and the World Cup star slotted the ball home to spark wild celebrations with the former Portsmouth player tearing off his shirt.
The 77,000 spectators were driven delirious with joy in the 79th minute.
Pato advanced with the ball, saw the Napoli 'keeper off his line and chipped into the far corner prompting once again huge celebrations with captain Gennaro Gattuso even mimicking his infamous headbutt on Spurs assistant coach Joe Jordan as he embraced Allegri.
Napoli found little in the final 10 minutes to raise their spirits as their two standout players this season Uruguayan striker and scorer of 20 goals Edinson Cavani and Slovakian playmaker Marek Hamsik failed to sparkle when it mattered most.
Milan travel to out of form Juventus, who have lost four of their last six matches, next Saturday.

Super sub Vela saves West Brom again

West Bromwich Albion's Mexican forward Carlos Vela (L) scores during the English Premier League football match against Stoke at The Britannia stadium, Stoke-on-Trent. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Mexican international striker Carlos Vela grabbed relegation-threatened West Brom another point with another late goal here on Monday as they drew 1-1 with Stoke City in their Premier League clash.
Vela - on loan from Arsenal - had only been on the pitch two minutes before he made his mark just as he did in the 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Wolves over a week ago.
Irishman Rory Delap had put Stoke 1-0 up early in the second-half in a match that got significantly better as it went on.
The point saw West Brom - who have kept just one clean sheet this term and have garnered only 14 points from their last 19 matches - move out of the bottom three to fourth bottom, a point clear of Wolves who occupy the first relegation place.
Nothing much of note occurred in the first-half as Stoke's habit of using their physical force prevented their more stylish opponents from expressing themselves in fluent fashion.
The visitors did test opposing goalkeeper Amir Begovic's alertness twice but it took over half an hour for them to achieve that as the Bosnian twice went down to save from former Celtic misfit Marc Antoine Fortune after good work by Graham Dorrans and Jerome Thomas.
Stoke showed little going forward save a rasping effort in the 42nd minute by Jermaine Pennant, whose shot scraped the woodwork.
However, that changed in the second-half as the hosts showed a more ambitious side to their play and were rewarded in the 52nd minute as Delap rose unmarked to head past Scott Carson.
Begovic, though, came to Stoke's rescue seven minutes later as he produced a save out of the top drawer to deny Dorrans, whose header from Steven Reid's corner took a huge deflection off Ryan Shawcross.
West Brom did finally beat Begovic in the 69th minute but Fortune's header from the enterprising Reid's cross clipped the bar - that was to be Fortune's last contribution as he was replaced by leading scorer Nigerian international Peter Odemwingie.
However, it was to be Vela who rescued another point for the visitors as he swooped onto Reid's cross and from close range slotted the ball past Begovic.
Begovic, though, once again came to Stoke's rescue and prevented West Brom fromn taking all the points as he saved smartly from Vela twice with his legs in time added on.

Rooney escapes ban over Wigan 'elbow'

Referee Mark Clattenburg (right) speaks to Manchester United's English forward Wayne Rooney (left) after he had clashed with Wigan Athletic's Irish midfielder James McCarthy (centre) during the English Premier League football match against Wigan on February 26. Rooney will face no disciplinary action over the alleged elbow, Sky News reported.
Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney will face no disciplinary action over an alleged elbow on Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, British television channel Sky News reported on Monday.
The England international appeared to elbow McCarthy in the back of the head during the first half of United's 4-0 victory at Wigan on Saturday.
Referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a free-kick at the time and subsequently told the Football Association that he felt he had made the correct decision, which left the FA unable to launch retrospective disciplinary action.
Wigan coach Roberto Martinez had criticised the failure to punish Rooney on Saturday.
"I felt Wayne Rooney was very fortunate. It was clearly a red card," Martinez said. "I saw the incident clearly and the referee did as well because he gave the free-kick.
"Once you give a free-kick it is quite clear that it is a red card. When you look at the replay, it is quite clear he catches James McCarthy in the face with his elbow."
However, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson felt Clattenburg was right not to penalise Rooney and said he feared a witch-hunt in the British media.
"I have had a chance to see it. There is nothing in it," Ferguson said. "Mark Clattenburg saw it. I think he said it was an accident.
"But, what will happen, the question has been asked and because it is Wayne Rooney, the press will raise a campaign to get him hung by Tuesday or electrocuted or something like that.
"It is unbelievable. Watch the press. It will be interesting to see it."
Had Rooney been charged with violent conduct, he would have faced a three-match ban, ruling him out of United's upcoming fixtures with Chelsea, Liverpool and either Arsenal or Leyton Orient in the FA Cup.
